Recommendation: This book is good if you want a good "magic" story. It also has a great sense of humor. If you want to know the real way that events in history occurred then read this book.

Summary: This is the story of twins who have to stick together and help The Immortal Nicholas Flamel save the world, as we know it. They have to retrieve a book called the Codex that was written thousands of years ago, from an evil magician named Dr. John Dee and The Dark Elders. Along the journey they team up with an immortal celtic vampire. They have many battles along the journey, in which they fight millions of rats, cats and crows, birdmen, and catmen and even the great Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess. They travel through different worlds called Shadow Realms that are connected to our world. The climatic battle, in a small town in southern California, involves them fighting hundreds of re-animated corpses. This book is an amazing action packed adventure. This is the first book out of six in a series about the twins and The Immortal Nicholas Flamel.

Explanation of Rating: I gave this book a four star rating because it held my attention and was very well written. I liked it because the author has researched the events, talked about in this book, very thoroughly. I also liked how I could relate to the twins in this book because they were realistically written and close to my age. They act how most of the teenagers act in these days like texting and technology. The battles in this book were very captivating in the sense that they were realistic without being realistic. They were very descriptively written which helped me visualize it better.

Favorite Passage: Sophie leaned forward and kissed the old woman on the cheek, then she turned and hurried down the length of the shop. "We have to go," she said breathlessly, "we have to get away from here." She had no idea what lay outside, but her newfound knowledge enabled her imagination to populate the fog with any number of monstrous creatures. "And close the door behind you," the Witch called out. And at that moment all the lights flickered out and died. Ojai was plunged into darkness.
